When local Black Banditz owner/Flaunt buddy Dan Regan walked into our offices and asked, “Who prices perishable art?” admittedly, we were a little confused. By the time our attention had fully focused on Regan, he was less about explaining and more about showing, quickly directing our attention to the documentary now playing on our computer screen.

A few minutes later, it all made sense. 

We’re engrossed in a raw and modern film. A documentary called “Skin”, which explores the increasingly complementary worlds of high art and tattooing. Eliciting the genius of contemporary art heavyweights like Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, and Raymond Pettibon, “Skin” contemplates art with a new type of canvas in mind, where an artistic idea becomes a bodily execution. Shot in tattoo shops throughout Los Angeles, Paris, London, and New York, “Skin” collapses two artistic worlds, reuniting them under the vision of director Ryan Hope. Through personal experience, we’ve found that nothing is more groundbreaking than collaboration, and perhaps this is why “Skin” is so striking.  Hope approaches a subject matter that has yet to be successfully depicted, but as tattoo artist Cliff Raven says, “You don’t need a reason to do anything.” He’s probably right, but a movie like “Skin” has definitely been a long time coming.
