“This is a fabric that i have specially developed for the spring 2012 collection,” Prabal Gurung explains, showing me a single-breasted, tight-fitting jacket. “I was inspired by the Japanese erotic photographer Araki’s Sensual Flowers series, and, in particular, a black-and-white photograph of a rose. I worked for months with a printmaker in London to create this floral print. To cut this jacket correctly, I have to use over five yards because I have to align each side of the floral print pattern to exactly match the print of the fabrics so that the print on the jacket looks like a real three-dimensional flower.” He turns the jacket around.
